Sociology

This blog is made for a introduction to sociology class for college. It is a project blog talking about our interests in the class and teaching us how to create a blog. This is a very productive class and i would recommend it to people in college looking for something interesting to take.

Chapter 3-Sociological Research

This is a story where a WSU sociologist uses surveys to get her information about Ghana and the result of why and how much domestic violence there are. She has a hypothesis as to why it happens and explains how she uses a vignette technique which is where she asks them about a few hypothetical situations and then surveys their response. I found it to be a good article because its local and simple.

The video has good information but you may want to listen to it on mute the music just does not seem to do the video justice.

My thoughts:
This chapter grabbed my interest because it talks about all the ways they get information in order to test hypothesis.  It is very informative and really explains the research that sociologists have to go through in order to gain the information they want to examine.  I was looking at the chapter and saw a lot of correlations between the things they try to answer in the method used and the answers i look for in methods i use to test things in biology.  It really explain the science part of the idea of sociology like hypothesis, variable, random sample, and informed consent.  Those are just a few similar terms and I am a science guy so it keeps my attention when i can compare it to my field.

I think another part of the chapter that caught my interest was how many different ways there are to collect the information.  The chapter talks about the questionnaires, interviews, observations, and participant observation.  There were all sorts of methods and how each on works best for certain situations.  The video i posted talks about all of them and the pro's and con's of each i found it interesting.
